What to Expect During Your DOT Physical

A DOT physical is a health check mandated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to ensure drivers can safely operate commercial vehicles. During your exam, we will review:

  • Vision & Hearing: Ensuring you meet the standard for road safety.
  • Blood Pressure & Pulse: Monitoring for cardiovascular health.
  • Urinalysis: A quick screen for underlying conditions like diabetes or kidney disease (this is not a drug test).
  • Physical Examination: A thorough review of your respiratory, neurological, and musculoskeletal systems.

How to Prepare for Your Appointment

To ensure your exam goes as smoothly as possible, please bring the following:

  • Driver’s License: A valid form of photo ID.
  • Current Medical Card: If you are renewing.
  • List of Medications: Including dosage and the name of the prescribing doctor.
  • Corrective Lenses/Hearing Aids: If you require them for driving.
  • Medical Clearances: If you have a history of heart issues, sleep apnea (bring your CPAP compliance report), or diabetes – having your recent specialist records will speed up your certification.
  • If you have diabetes and are insulin dependent, please be sure to bring 90 days of electronic blood sugar monitoring to your primary physician and have them fill out the MCSA-5870 Form and bring clearance with you no later than 45 days after having your PCP sign the form. You can find the form directly on the FMCSA website here: https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/medical/insulin-treated-diabetes-mellitus-assessment-form-mcsa-5870

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How long is a DOT medical certificate valid?

Most certificates are valid for 24 months. However, if you have certain health conditions like high blood pressure, a heart condition, or sleep apnea; the max certification period may be for a shorter duration (e.g., 3 months, 6 months, or 1 year).

What happens if I don’t pass?

Our goal is to help you stay healthy and on the road. If a disqualifying condition is found, Dr. Bland will discuss the next steps, which may include consulting with a specialist to manage the condition so you can be cleared for duty in the future.

Will I receive a copy of my medical card and long form?

We will provide you with a hard copy of your medical card at your appointment upon passing, and e-mail you a copy of your long form and medical card for your records to provide to your employer. If your employer uses the CereDrive system, they will have real time access to this information via the portal.

Do I need to submit my medical card to the DMV?

No. New rules require that the medical providers submit all information to the DMV along with FMCSA. All submissions occur real-time, same day via our compliance software portal.
